My Approach

The ReFOCUS approach

ReFOCUS with Reece came about after nearly 20 years directly providing care and support to individuals and families facing dementia and its' impacts, whether that's at home, in the community, or in residential care.

I found the majority of my work has centred around better understanding the lived experience of dementia, learning to understand behaviour as communication. I found that when we focus on that, we can overcome barriers, avoid conflict, reduce stress and distress, promote engagement, and shift the focus.

My approach is investigative, using evidence-based practice and my own experience to explore specific behaviours. Through this approach we can develop holistic strategies, with "what if it doesn't work" plans, and develop a shared language of dementia.

More about Reece

Why Invest in Behaviour Support?

Many dementia services focus on diagnosis, information or medical management.

What families often need is:

  • Practical advice for everyday situations
  • Confidence in how to respond
  • Strategies tailored to their home and their loved one
  • Support before crisis

Early behavioural support can:

  • Reduce reliance on medication
  • Reduce carer stress
  • Prevent emergency admission to residential care
  • Prevent unnecessary hospitalisation
  • Improve quality of life for everyone

A single avoidable care home placement can cost £1,000+ per week. Unnecessary admissions to hospital can be devastating.

A structured behaviour plan costs a fraction of that — and may extend safe, calmer living at home.

Who I Work With

I support:

  • Adult children caring for a parent
  • Spouses caring for a partner
  • Families experiencing tension around care decisions
  • Families who want to do better, but don’t know how

This service complements GP, clinical, and specialist dementia services — it does not replace them.
